Not having the voice is the same as having nothing

I’m working on the synopsis for my next book. I have a decent idea of the main character and conflict and the plot, but I don’t quite have the voice yet.

Which means I have nothing.

The voice is really the key to everything. I also don’t believe it’s possible to have a voice and not have a central conflict. For me, ‘having the voice’ means the character is alive. Alive characters create stories around them, whereas not-yet-alive characters can’t hold down any sort of story.

    I’m in this place.. or rather finding that the voice and character of a novel, the plot and setting of which are vividly alive to me and I can’t wait to write, just won’t gel – which is unusual for me because those things usually come first. Is there anything you do to bring them alive? Do you have a process for it? Or do you just wait?

      I know. It feels really odd, and makes me wonder if I actually have anything at all.
