Watched an episode of television for the first time in two months

Maybe Orange Is The New Black is just so good that it killed TV for me, but ever since I finished watching that show, I haven’t felt much desire to watch TV (other than Jeopardy with my roommates and, once, a rerun of How I Met Your Mother, I think). However, today the dam was broken. I watched an episode of The Good Wife. It wasn’t terrible. It made me realize, though, that we’re two months into the new TV season and I’ve missed everything. I think that this year will mark the year when I finally fell behind on pop culture. Last year, I was current on so many shows. This year, the thought of trying to catch up fills me with ennui.

I don’t really mind that. TV is great, but for a writer, it’s more productive to read books. But I do worry that disengagement with pop culture will be, in some way, detrimental in the long run.

When I stop listening to the radio, then I’ll know that it’s gotten really bad.

I wouldn’t worry too much about not being engaged with pop culture, unless you’re writing about pop culture. Re: TV, there is so very little out there worth watching. I hardly watch as much as an hour a day, aside from news. We don’t have cable or satellite, so stuff like Game of Thrones I wait for on DVD. It’s still your basic wasteland.

I count watching DVDs and netflix and such as “watching TV.” Like most people my age, I hardly ever watch actual TV channels.
