On living alone

My move to Baltimore has been rather leisurely, to say the least. Since my parents live in D.C., I haven’t had to rush to get out of a hotel room or off of a friend’s couch. Nonetheless, I’ve made slow progress towards relocating myself. On the 1st, I got the keys to my new apartment. Last weekend, I installed an air conditioner, took possession of a bed, and moved in some furniture (as well as about half of my possessions). And last night, I set up the internet in the apartment and spent my first night there.

Considering I’m 26, most of these tasks probably shouldn’t be new to me, but what can I say, I am a helpless baby chick who has, in the past, had parents and then roommates to hold his hand through all of these moving-related tasks.

But now I am finally on my own.

It’s pretty weird to be in your own apartment. The only other time I’ve ever lived alone was during my senior year of college when I had a single for one quarter. That felt weird too. It But even then, I shared a kitchen and bathroom and front porch with forty-eight other students, so I wasn’t really alone.

Now I am so alone. My toilet overflowed a little bit last night and I was like, “Egads, no one is going to take care of this unless I do something.” And when I drop something on the floor, it’s damn well gonna stay there until I move it. If I close the door, it’s not going to open until I open it. Etc. It’s all very odd.

I’m definitely not someone who needs much personal space or privacy, but I am excited to see what those things are like.

Congrats on your first solo apartment! I remember my first. IT WAS GLORIOUS.

What was it like to go back to communal living? I’m afraid that I won’t be able to adjust (if it someday comes to that).
